My Review of (INFO 4800) Project based Information Systems
Grade: A
Difficulty: 3/10
Rating: 2/10
Time commitment: 4 hours/week
-------------------------------
This course studies information systems from the perspective of corporate management, rather than at a technical or programming level. It goes through case studies of how management can successfully leverage information systems to achieve company objectives, such as revenue maximization, cost reduction, customer satisfaction.
Assignments
- Quiz (50%): There is a Pearson online electronic textbook that has quizzes at the end of each chapter. So you can just read the textbook and complete the quizzes at your own pace through the semester. I did them all in one weekend. Took me approx 15 hours in total.
- Term Project (38%): A big semester long project to discuss a specific information system of your choice, with lots of milestone deliverables. Proposal, template, examples, presentation slides, a final report. Took me probably 15 hours all together.
- Participation (12%): You just contribute discussion to the class forum.
Thoughts
This is essentially a business school course. Information technology driving innovation in business is an old news. But this course really tries to offer systemic analysis, from various perspectives and frameworks, with lots of lots of example case studies. one case study that was interesting to me was how mandarin oriental hotel keeps track of customer preference (room type, temperature, tv program, newspaper, so on) in detail. The grading standard was overall lenient.
